Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll has published a new book, The Poetry of Meng Haoran, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published "At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffstädt, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." Later this year a revised and expanded third edition of Prof. Kroll's Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese will be published by Brill.

Antje Richter, Associate Professor of Chinese, is the current president of the Early Medieval China Group. The Early Medieval China Group was established to promote the communications between scholars who focus on the Early Medieval period in East Asia. The group publishes Early Medieval China, the only English language journal devoted exclusively to academic scholarship relating to the period roughly between the end of the Han and beginning of the Tang eras. Levi Thompson, Assistant Professor of Arabic, was recently interviewed by the popular literary website ArabLit about his work translating the Syro-Palestinian poet Ramy al-Asheq, who now lives in Germany. You can read the interview by Tugrul Mende. Ever Since I Did Not Die, a book of essays translated into English by Dr. Isis Nusair and edited by Professor Thompson, will appear soon with the Arab List at Seagull Books. My Heart Became a Bomb, a book of al-Asheq’s poetry translated into English by Dr. Thompson, will come out with the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies Press in January 2021 and now My Heart Became a Bomb is available for purchase.

“The students who took advantage of this opportunity had a good experience. Some of the freshmen told me that they had no idea about the amount and variety of resources available to them at the library. The upperclassmen in the other course reported that the experience helped them figure out how to narrow their search for relevant resources.”

First Year Seminar: Headwaters: Going Upriver
Headwaters: Going Upriver in Literature and Film Thomas Levi Thompson, Asian Languages and Civilizations Approved for GenEd - Diversity: Global Perspective Taking account of river journeys as our focal point, this seminar explores headwaters in literature and film. We will also reflect on what it means to travel into the unknown, to seek out unexplored headwaters, to undertake a life-changing journey upriver. Along the way, we will discuss the works of Joseph Conrad, Tayyib Saleh, Ibn Fadlan, Francis Ford Coppola, Ciro Guerra, Werner Herzog, Toni Morrison and Rudaki, among others.

ARAB 3330 The Arabic Novel
Focusing on the origins and development of the novel genre in the Arabic tradition, this course examines both the aesthetic qualities of the genre as an artistic form and the ways that it has depicted and intervened in the modern social, political, and cultural upheavals that have shaped the Arab world in the 20th century. Authors include Najib Mahfuz, Abd al Rahman Munif, Hanan al-Shaykh, and Ghassan Kanafani. Taught in English.

Congratulations to Mona Attwa for being selected as one of this year's winners of the Best Should Teach Gold Award for for excellence in teaching and for outstanding contributions to improving higher education at the �ֲ��ý Boulder. The Best Should Teach initiative was established in 1996 and is managed by the Graduate Teacher Program in coordination with the School of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School at the �ֲ��ý at Boulder. This year’s award committee commended Attwa for her dedication to teaching and mentoring in ALC, and her active participation in the larger teaching and learning community at CU. One student said, “Mona encourages us to follow our dreams and gives us every tool she can in aiding our success. Arabic is a tough language but she makes learning it easy and fun.” Another remarked that “Mona’s attitude, positivity, energy, and passion every day without exception exemplify the Best Should Teach motto.”

The award ceremony was held on Thursday, September 12th from 6-7:30pm in the UMC ballroom. Congratulations also to our lead TAs, Alana Brack and Wenfei Wang for recieving the Best Should Teach Silver Award!

The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations celebrated Professor Paul W. Kroll on the occasion of his retirement on Tuesday, April 30th. He has been with the departement since its inception and has contributed to the success of the department tremendeously as a scholar, administrator, teacher and mentor. We enjoyed celebrating his long dedicated years at CU and wish him luck for the next chapter of his life.
