The CU Boulder Asian Studies Graduate Association (CUBASGA) invites submissions for its annual graduate student conference, to be held fully in-person on the CU Boulder campus on February 24 & 25, 2024.

We invite current graduate students from across the US and around the world engaged in research on Asia, particularly in the fields of Chinese and Japanese studies, to submit proposals on their research across fields, such as: Anthropology, Art & Art History, Literatures, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Film Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Theatre & Dance, Urban & Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies.

The conference will include keynote addresses from two prominent scholars in Chinese and Japanese studies: Professor Wai-yee L i(1879 Professor of Chinese Literature, Harvard University) and Professor Zev Handel (Department Chair, Asian Languages and Literatures, University of Washington). Keynote speakers and �ֲ��ý faculty will be on hand to provide feedback to presenters throughout the conference. Above all, the conference is a forum through which graduate students, researchers, and faculty are able to engage in dialogues of critical importance to the development of our respective fields, providing participants with opportunities to expand their academic perspectives as well as academic and professional networks.

To apply, please submit a 300-word conference paper proposal and a CV to cubasga@colorado.edu by December 15, 2023. Successful applicants will be notified of acceptance by the end of 2023. For inquiries, please email CUBASGA student administrators at cubasga@colorado.edu.

We invite a broad range of research interests on the region that may include, but are not limited to, the following fields: Anthropology, Art and Art History, Literatures, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Film Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Theatre and Dance, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies.

The conference will include keynote addresses from two prominent scholars in Chinese and Japanese studies, Prof. Tina Lu (Colonel John Trumbull Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Yale University) and Prof. Sabine Frühstück (Koichi Takashima Chair in Japanese Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara). Keynote speakers and �ֲ��ý faculty will be on hand to provide feedback to presenters throughout the conference. On April 25th 2022, the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations held a retirement celebration in honor of:

Chun-ling Hsu, Assistant Teaching Professor of Chinese,
Faye Kleeman, Professor of Japanese, and
Terry Kleeman, Professor of Chinese and Religious Studies.

Each of them has a long dedicated teaching, research and service at CU Boulder. The department will surely miss them, but will be wishing them the best on their new journey in life!

The following students have been inducted into the National Collegiate Chinese Honor Society. The National Chinese Honor Society College Chapter, sponsored by the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CLTA), is founded to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of college students in learning Chinese as a second language, to encourage them to continue to study Chinese after they graduate from college, and to promote the study of Chinese language, literature, and culture in the United States. �ֲ��ý must have enrolled in the sixth semester of the Chinese course, maintain a GPA in Chinese language and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 at time of nomination. Accepted students received an electronic certificate, and the name of each accepted student are now listed on the webpage for the National Chinese Honor Society College Chapter at the CLTA website.

The following seven students have been inducted into the Japanese National Honor Society – College Chapter (JNHS-CC). The Japanese National Honor Society recognizes and encourages achievement and excellence in the study of the Japanese language. The society is administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ), and membership is recognized as a national achievement. These students are ones of over 1,000 college and university students who have been inducted into JNHS-CC since its establishment in 2007. �ֲ��ý must maintain a GPA of 3.5 in 5 semester- or 7 quarter-courses in Japanese language and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 at time of nomination. �ֲ��ý who are nominated for membership receive Certificates of Excellence and red-and-white cords to wear at graduation, and are recognized on the AATJ website.

Congratulations to Payne Hennigan! While earning his PhD in Economics at CU Boulder (Department of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences), Payne has been devoting his free time to the study of Chinese and Japanese in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations. He has now accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at Peking University, arguably the most prestigious university in China. Payne is scheduled to graduate from CU in May 2022, and he will take up his new position in Beijing on September 1. Well done, Payne!

The story is also featured in the Colorado Arts & Sciences Magazine.

Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll has published a new book, The Poetry of Meng Haoran, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published "At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffstädt, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." Later this year a revised and expanded third edition of Prof. Kroll's Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese will be published by Brill.

Congratulations to our Chinese major, Morgan Sackett, for receiving a ROTC Scholarship to study Mandarin in Kaohsiung, Taiwan at Wenzao University of Languages for eight weeks this summer through the Indiana University!

"I started learning Chinese because I fell in love with the process of learning foreign languages and enhancing my understanding of other cultures. As far as why I chose Chinese, I figured between China's increasing global influence and the sheer number of people who speak Mandarin that it would be a useful language to learn."

She started learning Chinese in high school and chose to major in Chinese at CU Boulder. She plans to use Mandarin by teaching English in either Taiwan or China and hopes to be able to translate comics in the future.

Congratulations to Lindsey Quint for being selected for Critical Language Scholarship! The CLS program is a fully funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

Linsey majors in International Affairs and Chinese. She began studying Chinese in 6th grade and chose to continue studying Chinese at CU Boulder because she loved the academic rigor of it.

"Chinese is incredibly challenging and learning it has pushed me to grow as an individual. The professors and language instructors that I have had the privilege of learning from are another big reason why I continued studying Chinese in university. I am so grateful for the amazing classes that were offered as well as the endless support from the Asian Language and Civilization department,"

Her plan with the Critical Language Scholarship has not been set in stone yet due to COVID-19, whether the program will be held in person or virtually, but she hopes to be able to attend it in person. She will be attending graduate school and wants to eventually do research in China. The Critical Language Scholarship will support her in developing her language skills further.
