BME faculty and staff,
Launching a new interdisciplinary degree program requires finesse in negotiation. Fortunately, Dean Emeritus Rob Davis has stepped up to provide his wisdom and negotiation skills on behalf of the BME program.
Upon joining the program in summer 2020, Rob immediately set out to create fair and equitable MOUs between the program and departments. These MOUs stabilized the BME undergraduate curriculum by providing clear agreements on departmental courses that would be part of our core, including five from ChBE, four from ECEE and four from MechE. I was personally amazed to see how smoothly these MOUs were negotiated and finalized with the three department chairs. Only Rob could have achieved this so quickly and amicably. Thanks to Rob’s efforts, the BME curriculum transitioned from a theoretical list of courses to a concrete degree program with firm teaching commitments from the departments. In a parallel effort, Rob negotiated with Dean Keith Molenaar to create a well-justified and streamlined budget for the program, as well as remuneration to the departments for their teaching commitments to the program. Again, only Rob could have achieved this so swiftly and harmoniously.
We in the program and college are grateful to Rob for stepping into this important role and giving his valuable time and effort to ensuring the program’s success. I am honored and humbled to work alongside Rob. I have learned so much from Rob about effective leadership and how to selflessly serve the college. Thanks to Rob, we can all be confident in the future of our BME program and its interrelationship with our home departments.
