The Center for Asian Studies and the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations are pleased to announce the sixth annual CHINA Town Hall, to take place on Monday, October 29. CHINA Town Hall is a national day of China-related programming, designed to provide Americans with an opportunity to discuss issues related to U.S.-China relations with leading experts in the field.
The program will open with a webcast from Beijing featuring Gary Locke, U.S. ambassador to China, discussing U.S.-China relations. Ambassador Locke is the first U.S. ambassador of Chinese ancestry and assumed duty as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China on August 13, 2011. Previously, he served as the Secretary of Commerce where he presided over a 17 percent increase in exports from 2009 to 2010, while exports to China saw a 32 percent increase. The webcast will be followed by a local presentation from an on-site China specialist. This year’s local speaker is to be determined.
This is the fourth year the Center for Asian Studies is hosting this event. Sydney Rittenberg, the first American to join the Chinese Communist Party, spoke at this event as an on-site speaker in 2010 and is featured in on New York Times.
