[Journal] K-Pop Politics: Digital Mediation and Global Fandom

Deadline: November 2, 2012

The K-pop frenzy is anything but ordinary. On May 1 this year, some 300French fans holding Korean national flags gathered in front of the LouvreMuseum, calling for additional K-pop concerts to be held in Paris. Similarrallies ensued in London’s Trafalgar Square, Poland’s Warsaw, andColumbia’s Bolívar Square.Though on a continuum with Hallyu (the Korean Wave), K-Pop departs from theearlier waves of Korean popular culture in its media specificity, geographic scope and generational focus. Preceding currents of Koreanpopular culture had centered on the cult of Korean television dramasdistributed through conventional mass media (terrestrial, satellite, andcable televisions) to neighboring countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan,Vietnam, etc. The K-pop craze, however, is beyond “Asian” bounds. This yearalone, K-pop concerts were held in L.A., New York, Paris, London, Sydney,Tokyo, etc., and K-Pop flash mobs continue to take place in suchmetropolises as Singapore, Lima, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Jakarta, Vancouver,Dublin, Bergen, and Rome.

The volume will be co-edited by JungBong Choi (NYU) & Roald Maliangkay(Australian National University). In order to be considered, please sendyour abstract (500~750 words) to JungBong Choi (jbc7@nyu.edu<

[Journal] Special Issue on Constructing Interstitial Heritage: architectures, visions and experiences in the InternationalJournal of Tourism Anthropology

Deadline: November 15, 2012

The International Journal of Tourism Anthropology (IJTA), a quarterlyfrom Inderscience, is a refereed international journal that publisheslatest and quality research on tourism anthropology. This specialissue invites submissions that explore the past and present modesthrough which alternate cultural heritage can be preserved andencouraged. In particular, it focuses on the realm of the interstice:a space, opening, crevice etc, between things near together or betweenthe component parts of a body. Interstitial heritage can be locatedbetween entities as well as within them. By nature, it creates anaperture that forms an alternate field and conduit to existent

structures. It needs not to negate necessarily a prevailingsocio-political and economic frame (though it may well do so), but itultimately provides individuals and groups with a ground on which toconstruct their environment and express themselves within it ratherthan be subservient to it. In the city, for example, spontaneousoccupations of grounds and temporary archisculptures have offeredmodels of interstitial production. In the ever increasing flow ofimages during the 20th century, visual strategies aiming to buildalternate banks of visual data have grown inside and outside of theconstraints of the society of spectacle. In the every day life of anincreasingly global world, numerous attempts have been made to proposebehaviours and experiences that challenge the predicates of top-downsocial fabrics.
