Starting in Spring 2014, the Center for Asian Studies is offering a new minor program in Asian Studies. We are very excited for this addition to our program as the minor in Asian Studies allows students to engage in interdisciplinary study of Asia, adding an important global focus to their primary studies.
Through the Asian Studies minor, students can focus on one or two areas of Asia, gaining a strong foundation in through courses in traditional civilizations, modern civilizations, and the social sciences. This provides a strong foundation in knowledge of the Asian world, preparing students to enter a job market that is globally oriented and increasingly integrated with Asia. The Asian Studies Academic Advisor and Faculty Advisor strongly encourage thematic or regional concentration, and they are available for help in customizing the minor.
To receive the Asian Studies minor, students must take 21 credits at a minimum, 12 of which must be upper-division. Minors can choose to take ASIA 4830, which is an independent study in which students write a senior thesis or design a project, but this is not required for minors. While the minor does not grant credit for foreign language, students are encouraged to study abroad. Up to 9 credit hours earned through study abroad can be applied to the minor.
