Celebrating over 30 years, the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations offers small class sizes which allow our Graduate ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ the opportunity to work closely with expert faculty who have extensive research experience and publish regularly on topics which form an essential component in the education of our students.
Generous Funding Opportunities
M.A. and PhD Programs are offered with generous funding opportunities including fellowships, tuition reimbursement, and stipends for Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Part-Time Instructorships. Additionally, the Chinese and Japanese graduate programs at CU have been selected for inclusion in the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP), through which graduate students who are residents of 15 participating states may enroll in certain distinctive programs at public institutions on an in-state resident tuition basis.
M.A. Program in Chinese
The M.A. Program in Chinese is designed to offer students maximum general exposure to the long sweep of Chinese literary history while also requiring intensive study of some particular genre or period. Each of the program's faculty members specializes in one or another of these periods and has additional competence in a second period. The program is truly comprehensive in scope and focuses especially on preparing students for Ph.D. study and eventual careers in Sinology. Since 1991, more than thirty-five graduates of the Chinese M.A. program have gone on to doctoral study in Chinese literature, religion, or history.
M.A. Program in Japanese
The M.A. Program in Japanese is designed to provide advanced-level training in Japanese language, literature, and civilization. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ may select one of two tracks within the M.A. program. One track emphasizes advanced study of Japanese literature and gives students a broad knowledge of Japanese literary and cultural history. The second track, emphasizing Japanese language and civilization, will be of particular benefit to those planning to teach at the pre-collegiate level or to engage in business or public service professions.
