About the lecture: What kinds of knowledge and understanding are engendered when contemporary artists engage, in their artwork, with overlooked histories of (post)colonial modern art? How do their practices鈥攚hich I call聽artistic art histories鈥攃ontribute to the ongoing decolonization of the discipline of art history?
About the Scholar: Roger Nelson is an art historian and curator, currently Assistant Professor of Art History in the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was the 2022 recipient of the A.L. Becker Southeast Asian Literature in Translation Prize. His current book project considers聽artistic art histories聽in Southeast Asia. He is co-founding co-editor of聽Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, a scholarly journal published by NUS Press.聽
