National Transgender Awareness Week, Nov. 13 – 19,is a time to celebrate, uplift and honor our transgender friends, family, students, staff, and faculty. The week concludes on November 20thwith the Transgender Day of Remembrance; an annual observance that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

One of the best ways to support our transgender community is by being an ally.

The Basics: Things to Know about Being an Ally

  • There is no one way to be a 'perfect' ally.
  • You don't have to understand someone's identity to respect it.
  • You can't always tell if someone is transgender simply by looking at them.
  • There is no “one right way” to be transgender.
  • Continue to educate yourself.

Learning to be an ally is an ongoing process. For information on supporting transgender students, faculty and staff, or helping to change the world to be better for transgender people overall, can help.
