Matthew received his BS (Hons.) in biology & environmental science from Mount Allison University and his MS in civil engineering from Queen's University. The throughline of his research interests is microalgae, researching their contributions to marine biogeochemical cycles, the effects of their biogeography on shorebird and salmon migration, their applications in wastewater treatment, their role as bioindicators in riverine ecosystems and their potential as a sustainable source of calcium carbonate.

Before joining CU Boulder, Matthew spent two years as a scientist with the environmental NGO Ottawa Riverkeeper and worked as a technician for four other research groups. In his current role as lab manager with the Living Materials Lab, Matthew oversees the day-to-day operation of the lab and contributes to the lab's research output. In his spare time, Matthew is an avid birdwatcher, runner, cyclist and gardener.
