Letter from the Chair: Fall 2022

Dear ChBE community,

With the fall semester ending soonÌýand the holidays upon us, I feel grateful for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who continue to make our Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering welcoming and academically challenging.Ìý

Of note are the early successes of our young faculty. This year, major awards went to assistant professors Wyatt Shields and Laurel Hind. You can read about their research below. In addition, Kayla Sprenger and Ankur Gupta received competitive grants from funding agencies. These faculty, along with numerous recent hires of experienced faculty from other institutions, have contributed to the major growth of our research programs, with a record of $19 million in new awards last year.

With a continued focus on teaching excellence, three of our teaching faculty—Wendy Young,Melissa J. Mahoney and Charlie Nuttelman— have been promoted to the new position of Teaching Professor. Meanwhile, Professor (and Dean Emeritus) Rob Davis was recently named as a Distinguished Professor, the highest rank awarded at CU.

, which features chemical engineering education resources prepared by faculty for use by students and instructors, is going strong, receiving millions of uses each year. One small indication of LearnChemE’s reach: When I’ve visited other ChBE departments over the last year, I have been approached by students who have told me that LearnChemE played a big role in their own success. This program was the focus of our Buff Engineers Give Back campaign for the department. The campaign raised a total of $43,558 for the College of Engineering and Applied Science–thank you to those who supported our department and CU Engineering by making a gift! Gifts to support LearnChemE can still be made by visiting our and giving online.ÌýÌý

Our students’ achievements speak to the strength of our department community. Our graduating seniors won two of the four December honors from the College of Engineering and Applied Science, including the College Academic Engagement Award, won by Benjamin Chilton, and the College Perseverance recognition going to Jeffrey Miller. In total our students won 14Ìýof the 29Ìýtotal 2022 undergraduate CEAS awards, including the top award, the Colorado Engineering Council Silver Medal, which went to Jenna Nielson.

Wyatt Shields wins 2022 Packard Fellowship for microscale robotics

In a banner year that has included receiving five distinguished research awards, Wyatt Shields, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering, has been awarded one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious awards for young investigators: a Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Work of ChBE professors included in DOE's $400 million award for clean energy technologies

The DOE awarded $400 million through 43 Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRC). Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) members whose work will contribute to these EFRCs includeÌýChBE professors Seth Marder, Mike Toney and Wilson Smith. RASEI is a joint institute between CU Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Learning from pangolins and peacocks: Researchers explore next-gen structural materials

In a new review paper, a team of international researchers, including Hendrik Heinz, professor of chemical and biological engineering, have laid out how engineers are taking inspiration from the biological world and designing newÌýmaterials. Such nature-inspired materials could lead to better solar panels, soft robots and even coatings for hypersonic jets.
