Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Allison Aiken (PhDChem’08) was named to the Thomson Reuters list of the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.” The list recognizes 3,000 of the most influential authors in 21 fields of science or social science.

An unreasonable entrepreneur, speaker, traveler, adventurer, contrarian, designer and dog-lover — that’s how Daniel Epstein (Phil’08) describes himself. He is the founder of the Unreasonable Institute, which helps young people start social ventures and assists them in setting goals and making networks. Forbes magazine named Daniel to its “Impact 30” list, which identifies 30 leading innovators. He lives in Boulder.

Avery Bang (MCivEngr’09), CEO of Bridges to Prosperity, received an honorary doctorate of science degree from Clarkson University this spring. The award recognizes her commitment to engineering that benefits humanity. Since joining Bridges to Prosperity as a volunteer in 2006, Avery has worked to ensure safe, year-round access to markets and health clinics in rural developing communities. She was the featured speaker at this fall’s Back to Boulder Homecoming Weekend luncheon in the CU Rec Center and also received the Alumni Association’s Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Graduate Award.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation selected Jennifer Kling (MPhil’09) as one of 22 Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows. The fellowship is the nation’s largest award for PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences addressing questions of ethical and religious values. Jennifer is working on a doctorate in philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her dissertation project is titled “The State Right of Self-Defense: A Claim in Need of Justification.”

As founder and director of Peruvian NGO ConCiencia, Daniela Benavides (EPOBio’10) is focused on bringing Peruvian students outdoors to enjoy direct experiences with nature. Her organization works with some of the most underserved fishing communities in Peru. Daniela was asked to speak in Sydney, Australia, as the keynote speaker at the IUCN World Parks Congress.

Sarah Kleinman (PolSci’10) has begun a dual master’s/doctorate program in art history at Virginia Commonwealth University. She received a full-tuition scholarship and a two-year doctoral assistantship to support her research on audience engagement and public attitudes toward the arts. Sarah also was offered admission to programs at Boston University, Georgetown University and George Washington University. She has moved to Richmond, Va.

After completing more than 930 hours of unpaid public service legal work, Ashley Steele (Psych’10) was recognized by the University of Texas law school as a “Pro Bono Superstar.” She had the highest number of hours in her graduating class. She also was given a one-year fellowship with the Initiative for Public Interest Law at Yale Law School to work with the nonprofit Texas Defender Service, which advocates for fair and just criminal systems in Texas. Ashley’s project is to establish a statewide public defender office for Texas death penalty appeals.

Mountain Flower aims to generate awareness of sustainable agriculture among Boulder citizens.
