What we study

Our research focus is in air quality, particularly nanoscale aerosols (small particles or droplets suspended in air) that can be generated from everyday activities and impact human health worldwide. This image shows a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrograph of candle soot. Individual particles in this aggregate are about 20 nanometers in diameter.

In the lab

Our work can be performed in controlled chambers in the lab, where we assess emissions of nanoscale particles from consumer products and everyday activities. In this image, Dr. Vance is characterizing the emissions of silver nanoparticles from a consumer spray product.

Ultimate goal

Applications of our research range from consumer safety and "safer by design" consumer products, to indoor and outdoor air pollution, soiling of photovoltaic panels and sustainability, air pollutant sensing, human health, and climate change.听

This laboratory is led by Dr. Marina E. Vance, assistant professor in the听听& in the 听at CU-Boulder.

Our research focus is in听Air Quality, particularly in experimental measurement of the physical properties of aerosols (small particle or droplets suspended in air) in the context of ambient and indoor air quality. Applications of our research include evaluating听physical and chemical transformations of aerosols indoors and outdoors and听assessing emissions to inform听"safer by design" consumer products. Our mission is to perform experimental aerosol science research to听lead to a positive impact in human health and the environment.
