The Daily Camera features a team of capstone mechanical engineering students who won the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Boulder’s New Venture Challenge on April 3 with an idea that could improve how people use walkers. The team will present at Expo on April 26.

CU Boulder engineering students are finalizing an infrared imaging system that will allow a user to monitor subsurface features in wind turbine blades, an invention that could make wind turbine repair safer, faster and more cost-efficient.

Mechanical engineering capstone teams working with QL+ had two primary aims: making an impact on a wounded veteran’s life and putting mechanical skills to the test. They designed a luggage carrier device for wheelchair users and a disabled swimmer lift system.

This year's keynote speaker is alumna Hayley Cashdollar who graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2012 and has since received her MS from UC Berkley, worked with Tesla Motors and joined Proterra, an electric bus startup.

Associate Professor Corey Neu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CU Boulder is working with colleagues at CU Anschutz to detect early osteoarthritis, allowing younger patients to seek treatment earlier and possibly ward off the most severe measures including joint replacement.

The NSF has awarded 32 prestigious Graduate Research Fellowships to CU Boulder students, paving the way for them to continue their innovative and impactful research on campus. The awards recognize outstanding graduate students from across the country in STEM fields.

While Syd loves Mechanical Engineering, it is far from his only interest. Syd currently works in the THING Lab at ATLAS Institute and has been part of Engineers without Borders Rwanda, Biomedical Engineering Society and CU Emergency Medical Services.

Assistant Professor Peter Hamlington received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation this month for his work exploring the characteristics and behavior of highly turbulent premixed flames in engines using advanced computational simulations. He will receive $500K over five years.
