PACS 4100: Managing Organizational Conflict

About the Course

Understanding how organizations and teams experience and navigate conflict is vital for all professionals. Conflict is ubiquitous in human relationships and therefore, is a normal and routine part of what it means to work with, manage, and lead other people. This course introduces students to organizational conflict from a leadership perspective, the facilitative role leaders play in conflict intervention, and how leadership styles can affect organizational dynamics. Leadership is invoked in the broadest possible sense as one who demonstrates the ability to inspire, motivate, and mobilize people toward a common goal. Anyone in an organization can take a leadership role. Engaging with conflict proactively and productively requires the ability of leaders to recognize relational and structural factors within organizations and teams that generate conflict. Additionally, leaders must be skilled facilitators able to guide difficult conversations and manage conflict situations. This includes challenges such as working in teams, remote and other hybrid formats, international and cultural dimensions, as well as those related to gender discrimination and racial harassment. The course emphasizes theory and application, with students gaining applicable skills in conflict management.
