Graduated with MA in 2019
I am an MA student in the department of Linguistics. My research focuses on methods of language documentation and description that are inclusive of sociocultural and historical influences on the language. Central to my work is the inextricable link between society, culture, and language and the idea that no language can be extracted from its culture. My own documentary research thus far focuses on languages of West Africa, particularly Moba (a Gur language spoken primarily in Togo) and Edo (a Volta-Niger language spoken primarily in Nigeria). Most recently, during my MA Thesis research, I examined how these languages can be described more accurately and holistically via a closer consideration of social and historical influences such as environmental surroundings, sociocultural practices, and colonization.
