ATU 704 - The Princess and the Pea

ATU 704 is a story first published by Hand Christian Anderson in 1835, and has numerous retellings. The story, also known as "How to Tell a True Princess," tells of a girl being tested by a queen to see if she is a true princess worthy of marrying her son. The queen places a pea under a large number of mattresses in the girl's room, and when she wakes up she is bruised, revealing that she must be a true princess because she is so sensitive and is married to the prince.
