A team of LASP and Aerospace Engineering researchers has received a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts Phase I award. The team will use the funds to advance their concept of a futuristic swarm of satellites to shed new light on how the solar wind affects Earth鈥檚 upper atmosphere.

鈥淣ormally, we would expect black holes to evolve over millions of years,鈥� said Scepi, a postdoctoral researcher at JILA. 鈥淏ut these objects, which we call changing-look AGNs, evolve over very short time scales. Their magnetic fields may be key to understanding this rapid evolution.鈥�

On May 3, members of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and Colorado congressional delegation joined leaders from CU Boulder to showcase university research and federal partnerships. Last year, CU Boulder merited $481M in research funding from federal agencies.

On May 18, numerous leaders from on- and off-campus will gather to celebrate, introduce and officially launch the campus鈥檚 new high-performance computing infrastructure, dubbed 鈥淎lpine.鈥� The third-generation infrastructure is provisioned and available to campus researchers immediately.

Massimo Ruzzene will officially take on the role of Acting Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and Dean of the Institutes starting on Monday, May 2. Ruzzene and Terri Fiez have been working closely together on the transition since March 15.

The university will lead a five-year, $10 million NSF-funded initiative called MATCH, or Multi-Tier Assistance, Training and Computational Help, to reimagine cyberinfrastructure user support services and delivery to keep pace with the evolving needs of academic scientific researchers.

鈥淭his collaboration will expand government access to critical climate data and science, encourage the exchange of public information, and support the work being done at CU Boulder鈥檚 12 research institutes and more than 75 research centers,鈥� said Terri Fiez, vice chancellor for research and innovation at CU Boulder.

Currently, there is only one system physicians can use to get down to the bottom of the lungs鈥攁 rigid catheter that could potentially cause inflammation. The student team is working with medical device company Medtronic on making the tip of this catheter more flexible to increase control and reduce abrasion.

The Distinguished Research Lectureship is among the highest honors bestowed by the faculty upon a CU Boulder colleague. Each year, the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) requests nominations and a faculty review panel recommends one or more faculty members as recipients. The deadline for nominations is Monday, June 20, 2022.

The 乐播传媒 Boulder has named Dr. Matthew C. Keller director of its Institute of Behavioral Genetics (IBG), which conducts and facilitates research on the genetic and environmental bases of individual differences in behavior.
