The process individuals go through when contemplating change
How to best support students and staff at each stage
How to understand your own decision-making processes
Effective communication skills to support others in clarifying and implementing their goals

Are you feeling the load of stress right now? It’s a big concern for everyone in these busy and very uncertain times. Mindfulness can be a powerful approach to self-care. It is about paying attention in a particular way--on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgment. It’s a skill that also takes practice to cultivate and when used can help manage stress and boost emotional wellness.

Staff Council, along with counselors from CU’s Faculty & Staff Assistance Program, invite you to a presentation and Q&A about how you can utilize FSAP as your employee mental health support resource and gain ideas for mindfulness-based stress management strategies.

In this session we will explore:

Benefits of the FSAP program
Review the neuroscience behind the stress response
Identify the effects of mindfulness practice on the stress response
Learn simple mindfulness and self-care practices to be used daily

We highly encourage CU employees to attend to learn more about the FSAP office and techniques to navigate stress during this challenging time.

Online registration is now open for the Infrastructure and Sustainability Mentor Program (ISMP). Entering its ninth year, the ISMP is designed to provide CU Boulder staff an opportunity for both professional and personal development through a variety of self-directed activities as mentor team participants. The ISMP is open to all Infrastructure & Sustainability (I&S) staff who have been with the university for at least one year, and all �ֲ��ý staff members who want to participate in the program. Any CU Boulder staff member may participate, provided at least one team partner is an I&S Staff.

If you have ever considered developing a mentor program for your department or college, this is a great opportunity to learn from an award winning program and discover what you might implement in your own area. You can come with a partner or ISMP will assign one to you based on your expressed growth areas such as leadership development, project management, computer literacy, and more. This year’s program will be hosted via Microsoft Teams.

This is a wonderful opportunity for personal and professional development, as well as an opportunity to network with staff members from across campus. There is no cost to you to participate!

A record 53 teams (105 individuals) completed the ISMP during the 2019-2020 cohort.

Staff Council and campus leadership would also like to provide some follow up information to a specific question that was asked during the forum:

“Given we’re all required to wear masks on campus, what is CU doing to prevent and/or ensure all employees (including student staff) do not engage in racial profiling?”

After reviewing the response, Staff Council connected with campus leadership to provide additional context and engage in a conversation regarding racial profiling experienced by various communities on campus. This can include the use of face masks and how it can inhibit non-verbal communication (such as smiling) to navigate situations where racial profiling exists.

Staff Council and campus leadership would like to reiterate the importance of safety measures such as mask wearing in preventing the harmful impacts of COVID-19. We are dedicated to protecting the herd.

All parties involved in these discussions agreed to actionable items specific to this concern. In addition to existing efforts, there will be ongoing conversations regarding bias, working to incorporate new messaging specific to this concern in future campus communications, and including language crafted with Human Resources below:

CU is devoted to broadening awareness of Bias occurring on campus. And while we are committed to safety measures such as mask wearing to Protect Our Herd, we wish to acknowledge that many persons of color have been taught to express non-threatening signals through facial expressions (like smiling) to safely navigate the world in situations of profiling of any kind. We encourage all CU community members to educate yourself regarding bias, and strive to lead all interactions with kindness and good will.

Challenges they have faced
Things to consider as a manager when implementing and managing these arrangements

Boulder Staff Council, in collaboration with the I&S Mentor Program, will be hosting an informational session to provide CU staff the opportunity to learn more about the benefits the Infrastructure & Sustainability Mentor Program (ISMP) has created for staff, supervisors, and departmental success.

This mentor program functions on a partner team model. Program participants serve as role models to each other, providing support in identifying and pursuing career goals, and enhancing skills to prepare employees for future success in their careers with their department and the �ֲ��ý Boulder. Supervisors, department and organizational leaders are encouraged to attend to learn more about how staff participation in the program (or launching a program within your own division) can increase employee engagement and collaboration among campus units. Come to learn about the new core competencies and how they align with the campus vision!

In January the University Executive Leadership Team adopted a new set of core competencies for university staff for the Boulder campus. This new competency model translates the campus values into behaviors to ensure that employee behavior aligns with the campus culture and vision. The competencies were derived from the campus values identified by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE) in partnership with the campus. Building on ODECE’s comprehensive, campus-wide input process, behaviors were identified based on the descriptions provided in ODECE’s work, as well as review of nationally known research-based competency models. The work is inclusive of values reflected in the Colorado Creed. Presented by Merna Jacobsen, Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer and Mike Murray, Director of Strategic Initiatives. Light refreshments will be provided.
