The Sewall Symposium Series at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will present a lecture by Benjamin R. Barber, a professor of political science at Rutgers University, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Chapel.

The lecture, titled "Civil Society or Uncivil Markets: Can Democracy Survive in a World of Global Capitalism," will focus on the role of the United States in the global community.

At Rutgers, Barber is chair of the political science department and director of the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy. The center oversees programs that unite the theory and practice of democracy, including projects on arts education and global civil society.

BarberÂ’s commitment to democracy has extended across several disciplines. As a distinguished scholar and political theorist, he has frequently advised President Clinton and consulted with German President Roman Herzog. He also has written and directed plays and films for theater and public television.

Barber is the author of 14 books including "Strong Democracy" and "The Conquest of Politics." He holds a doctorate in government from Harvard University.
