The McNair Scholars Program at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder is still accepting applications for spring 1999 academic programs through Oct. 23.

Designed to help students who are underrepresented in graduate education earn doctoral degrees, the program is named for Ronald McNair, an African-American astronaut killed in the 1986 Challenger shuttle explosion.

To be eligible to join the McNair Scholars Program, undergraduates must be either low-income, first-generation college students or come from groups underrepresented in graduate education as defined in federal guidelines.

Prior to being accepted into the program, students must have completed at least 60 academic credit hours, have a minimum 2.8 grade-point-average and be U.S. citizens or residents.

Participants receive a $2,400 stipend for completion of extensive research projects to be presented at local and national conferences. The program also assists students in applying to graduate school by offering Graduate Record Examination preparation courses and application fee waivers to select universities and colleges.

The roughly 20 students selected to join McNair will participate in cultural activities and an orientation session beginning in November and will join the academic portion of the program in January.

Applications can be picked up at the McNair Scholars office in room 400 of the Willard Administrative Center. For more information visit the McNair Scholars web site at or call 303-492-5660.
