A reception and presentation of works honoring the artists and guests who helped create the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder exhibit "The Beast: Beauty," is set for Nov. 10 in the Center for British Studies on the fifth floor of Norlin Library.

The reception will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Shakespearean actor Chuck Wilcox will read from Shakespeare as part of the program.

The Friends of the Libraries have sponsored the show as part of the library's "Treasures of the Library" program to showcase Norlin's wealth of unique materials, which are available to all Colorado residents with valid identification.

A diverse exhibit created by the staff, faculty and students of the University Libraries, "The Beast: Beauty" opened in Norlin in September and runs through November.

Featuring poetry, painting, fabric and multi-media works, the show explores the perception and impact of beauty on various aspects of society.

The exhibit poses the question: How does what is perceived as beauty vary according to culture, gender, age, mores and utility? Viewers are invited to explore beauty as a concept -- from art to science and the divine to the mundane -- with a panel of poets and artists.

The exhibit was created in response to the Center for the Humanities and the Arts series: Beauty and its Discontents. For the second year the Libraries is joining the Center in addressing its annual theme.

"We made a call to artists within the University Libraries community," said Deborah Fink, public information librarian. "We had hoped for some very creative offerings and we were not disappointed. The response was wonderful.

"Some of the art displayed is from collections belonging to staff members. The vast majority of work, however, is original art by faculty, staff, students and family members. Most of the poetry was written for the project," Fink said.

Exhibit hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to midnight.
