Demolition of the Hunter Science Building at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will begin the morning of Dec. 21, according to Mike Martens, project manager with the university's Facilities Management department.
The 93-year-old building is being removed to make way for future construction of the ATLAS building and expansion of the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building. The ATLAS program -- the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society -- supports technology use across campus.
The Hunter building is located south of the Ketchum Arts and Sciences Building and east of Fine Arts, along 18th Street. Removal of debris from the site will be handled by trucks leaving from 18th Street and moving east on Colorado Avenue to U.S. 36.
Martens said the demolition should not impact the few people remaining on campus during the holidays while the work is being done. Removal of the building is expected to be completed by the time the spring semester starts on Jan. 14.
Hunter has been vacant since last September when the final portions of the CU Museum of Natural History collection were moved to the former geology building, now called the Museum Collections Building, on the west side of campus. Several offices also were relocated from Hunter.
Since October, the 52,000-square foot building has been fenced while environmental remediation work was done to remove substances including asbestos and lead paint. That work was contracted to Onyx Superior Special Services of Aurora. Demolition is being done by the Hillen Corp. of Commerce City.
