While they're still unpacking and finalizing class schedules, new and returning students at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will be able to participate in a wide range of welcome activities aimed at helping them learn about the campus and have fun in the process.
Classes begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26. Leading up to that date are dozens of events ranging from late-night movies and hiking the Flatirons to bicycle tours of Boulder and several events for foreign and minority students.
Although most students already have registered, some new freshmen and transfer students who are attending the final orientation session Aug. 20-22 also will be registering for classes. Class registration must be completed online by 5 p.m. Aug. 23.
After Aug. 23, registration will only be accepted on a space-available basis, and a $50 fee will be charged for registering late.
All new students living in residence halls -- primarily freshmen -- will meet in their respective residence hall lobbies from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, for Housing Orientation. Resident Advisors in each of the halls will meet with new students to talk about residence hall life and answer questions.
Chancellor Richard Byyny will address new students in the Chancellor's Convocation at Norlin Quadrangle on Friday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m. to be followed by an informal dinner. The convocation is mandatory for all new CU-Boulder students.
Following the convocation, students are invited to the University Memorial Center student union for free entertainment, including live bands, free pool, free bowling and a comedy troop.Ìý
Highlights of other activities planned for the week preceding classes from Aug. 20 through Aug. 26 follow.
* Aug. 21 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each residence hall will be host to various social activities for residents such as trips to Pearl Street, night hikes, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball.
* Aug. 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Foreign Student and Scholar Services scavenger hunt will meet in the Environmental Design Building basement. Members of the Cosmopolitan Club and international peer mentors will take international students on a tour of the main buildings on campus followed by a scavenger hunt.
* Aug. 22 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Environmental Center will meet up with students in room 355 of the University Memorial Center for the Boulder Bicycle Tour, leading new students on a tour of the bike path network on campus and in the surrounding Boulder community.
* Aug. 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Cosmopolitan Club and the international peer mentors will meet at Martin Park for a Foreign Student and Scholar Services International Barbeque Picnic.
* Aug. 22 from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. New students are invited to explore recreation options, fun casino games and other entertainment at the Rec Center Late Night and Residence Hall Association Casino Party.
* Aug. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A New Student Welcome Carnival on Farrand Field will be the place for students to find out about student clubs and organizations, what they do and how to join. Food and games will be included.
* Aug. 23 from 6 p.m. to midnight. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ are invited to hang out at the UMC Welcome Fest where they can check out a fusion of entertainment with live bands, free bowling and live comedy.
* Aug. 23 at 10 p.m. New students can hang out on Farrand Field under the stars to watch "American Pie" and "American Pie 2."
* Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ can join the Herd Student Alumni Association at Koenig Alumni Center for a hike to the third Flatiron and back for lunch.
* Aug. 24 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Foreign Student and Scholar Services Gathering on Observatory Field is a great way for international and U.S. students to meet and participate in soccer, volleyball, Frisbee and more.
