CU-Boulder appoints Bradley J. Birzer as second Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy

Bradley J. Birzer has been appointed the second Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy, the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Boulder announced today. Birzer, a professor of history and the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies at Hillsdale College in Michigan, will begin his one-year appointment beginning in fall 2014. “Dr. Birzer brings impressive breadth to CU, primarily in the discipline of history as well as areas of literary significance,†said Steven R. Leigh, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder.

Reporters using more ‘hedging’ words in climate change articles, CU-Boulder study finds

The amount of “hedging†language—words that suggest room for doubt—used by prominent newspapers in articles about climate change has increased over time, according to a new study by the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Boulder. The study, published in the journal Environmental Communication , also found that newspapers in the U.S. use more hedging language in climate stories than their counterparts in Spain.

Consumers infer coolness from brand autonomy, says CU-Boulder study

Consumers perceive a brand to be cooler when it suggests it’s true to itself and follows its own motives regardless of individual or societal norms and expectations, according to a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Boulder study involving Texas A&M University. However, the autonomous behavior of the brand needs to be contextually appropriate -- not over the top -- in order to be seen as cool as opposed to weird or rude, according to the paper published last week online and slated for the August edition of the Journal of Consumer Research.

LEAD 1000 successfully launches Leadership Studies Minor

A diverse class of students launched the Leadership Studies Minor this spring semester by completing LEAD 1000: Becoming a Leader. The newly created course serves as the foundation for the minor. Gordon Riggle, an accomplished leader in government, business and the military, as well as a long-time instructor of leadership courses on campus, taught the inaugural offering of LEAD 1000.

Governor Joe Garcia visited a highly successful program at Godsman Elementary School in Denver that promotes not only literacy, but biliteracy in Spanish and English. In partnership with the CU-Boulder’s BUENO Center for Multicultural Education , the school has fully integrated the Literacy Squared® model . As a result, Godsman has achieved impressive reading and writing gains in both Spanish and English that have outpaced the district and the state.

CU-Boulder, Jet Propulsion Lab to sign memorandum of understanding May 22

Jet Propulsion Laboratory Director Charles Elachi and his senior management team will be on the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Boulder campus May 22 to sign a memorandum of understanding with top university officials to continue and broaden a rich tradition of collaboration on space and Earth-science efforts going back nearly 50 years. Elachi will sign the MOU May 22 with CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. Located in Pasadena, Calif., JPL is a federally funded research and development facility managed by the California Institute of Technology for NASA.

CU Athletics records highest-ever APR scores

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Academic Progress Rate (APR) report based on information for the four year period between 2009-10 and 2012-13 was released by the NCAA Wednesday with those of all other Division I schools, with CU reporting record news for all 16 of its intercollegiate athletic programs in that time frame. For the fourth consecutive year, the APR results are the highest in school history since the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program was introduced in 2003.
