The functioning of human lungs will be explored during the July 15 lecture "The Physics of Breathing" at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. Ka Yee Lee, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, will present the free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B20 on the CU-Boulder campus. She will use videos, photographs and overhead projections to show the audience the basics of how a lung functions -- sort of an "under the hood" look at the human lung.

Richard Kraft, professor emeritus of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's School of Education, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to the Shouman University In-Service Teacher Training Department in Bulgaria. While in Bulgaria, Kraft will conduct seminars with various experts, conduct a workshop with teacher trainers and provide consultations on individual projects.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has been selected by NASA to build two of the four instruments for a satellite that will probe the shiny, silvery-blue polar mesospheric clouds that form about 50 miles above Earth's polar regions each summer.

The Colorado Materials Exchange, or COMEx, will kick off a statewide series of workshops on Wednesday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at Pueblo Community College in the Fortune Ballroom. Operated by the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, COMEx posts an online bulletin board for exchanging computers and electronics between businesses that have a surplus of equipment and community groups in Colorado that can use it.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Professor Michael Shull has been selected to be a co-investigator on a NASA space mission to map the cosmic web of hot gas that spans the universe. The spacecraft, known as the Spectroscopy and Photometry of the Intergalactic Medium's Diffuse Radiation, or SPIDR, is one of two "Small Explorer" satellite missions announced yesterday by NASA. The second was AIM, a satellite that will look at polar mesospheric clouds. CU-Boulder will design and build two of the four instruments and control the AIM satellite from campus.

Four prominent real estate professionals have joined the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Real Estate Council, or CUREC, a part of the Leeds School of BusinessÂ’s Real Estate Center. The new members are Edward N. Barad, Peter W. Grosshuesch, Chester T. "Chetter" Latcham and Kimra Perkins. CUREC consists of members from diverse disciplines in the real estate industry. Members play a key role in helping students supplement their education with professional experience.

Bush officially announced the 60 recipients of the 2001 Presidential Early Career Awards June 26, including four researchers from the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, which led the nation in winners.

Chris Green, professor of economics from McGill University of Montreal, to speak on "Stabilizing Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide: What Will it Take?" on Wednesday, July 10, at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. Green's talk will begin at 3 p.m. in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences auditorium, room 338. The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by CIRES' Center for Science and Technology Policy Research.

"Medieval Treasures: Books and Manuscripts from the 9th to the 15th Centuries" is now on display in the Norlin Library Special Collections department at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. The exhibit features classical and popular works in addition to medieval service books. Other highlights include two complete 13th century Parisian Bibles, examples of fragments and decorated borders, an English private letter and the work of two 15th century Florentine scribes.
