The Federal Land Policy and Management Act was passed in 1976, giving the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management a mandate to manage public lands and natural resources for the benefit of all Americans. In a day-long symposium on Nov. 16, the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s Natural Resources Law Center and the Center of the American West in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management will examine the impact that the ambitious law, referred to as FLPMA, has had on the West of today.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Board of Regents today accepted a conceptual land use assessment study for the CU-Boulder South campus, concluding a three-month process of seeking feedback and input from university constituents, including the public, on the general concepts for land use on the 308-acre site.

How are Americans responding to one of the darkest days in national history? How can the nation cope with such an unprecedented, staggering crisis?

A science team led by the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder is conducting extensive research on Alaska's North Slope to better understand, support and enhance local decision-making processes in the face of climate variability and potential environmental disasters.

Editors: Vendors with various equipment, including closed circuit TV and voice recognition software, will be available to photograph or videotape from noon to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 14, all day Nov. 15 and until noon Nov. 16 in the main lobby of the Coors/Events Conference Center. A workshop featuring demos of tactile graphics for the blind will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the center, room 3, and a special session on interfacing various hardware for blind users will be Nov. 15 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., also in room 3. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Provost Phil DiStefano has appointed a search committee to seek candidates for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Todd Gleeson, associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs, is currently serving as interim dean. Gleeson replaced Peter Spear, who resigned in July to accept the position of provost at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

From eighth-graders to rocket scientists, Boulder students and employees will have an opportunity this week to learn about the effects of air pollution, smoking, asthma and allergies on breathing and healthy lungs. The Breathe Better Bus was created by the Colorado Allergy and Asthma Centers' Breathe Better Foundation with the help of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder engineering students. The bus will visit Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Casey Middle School and the CU-Boulder campus as part of its Boulder County kick-off.

Joe Rosse, professor of management at CU-Boulder, won a Faculty Partnership Award and a $30,000 research grant from IBM Corporate Research and IBM Printing Systems Division. The award will provide funding for his research through the Center for the Integrative Study of Work at CU-Boulder, where he is director.

MEDIA ADVISORY A memorial service for CU-Boulder student Jaime Allison Frantz will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at Macky Auditorium. Frantz, a senior majoring in marketing, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Boulder on Nov. 3. The service is sponsored by the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. A reception will be held after the memorial at the sorority house at 1015 15th St., at the corner of 15th and Euclid. The public is welcome to attend.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has received $3.5 million from the National Science Foundation to help increase the number of women serving in administration positions in science, mathematics, engineering and technology programs at the university. CU-Boulder was one of eight universities to receive an NSF grant as part of the ADVANCE institutional transformation program. The awards, which will be distributed over five years, are part of an effort by the foundation to diversify the scientific work force.
