Stewart Hoover, professor of journalism and mass communications at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, will serve as the school's interim dean beginning July 1, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. Phil DiStefano, vice chancellor for academic affairs, appointed Hoover to the interim position following the resignation of Willard "Wick" Rowland, current dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, effective at the end of the semester.

The Office of Diversity and Equity at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will host the 1999 Equity and Excellence Banquet on Monday, April 26. The awards banquet dinner and graduation ceremony will be held at the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Equity and Excellence Awards are given to faculty, staff and students whose accomplishments focus on efforts to promote the principles of academic excellence, cultural pluralism and diversity.

The ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series will host the final presentation in its spring series with a performance by CU-Boulder Professor Willie Hill and his jazz quintet on Wednesday, May 5, at the Boulder Public Library. Hill, a professor of music education at CU and President of the International Association of Jazz Educators, will play his tenor saxophone.

Vernon Minor, associate professor in the departments of fine arts and comparative literature/humanities at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, has been selected to receive the Rome Prize, a fellowship awarded by the American Academy in Rome. The Rome Prize is the most prestigious grant for a scholar studying Roman art history in the United States. Minor's award is the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship in the History of Art, as part of the School of Classical Studies.

The Center of the American West at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will host a panel discussion titled, "Western Whodunits: Place in Crime," on Tuesday, May 4, at 5:30 p.m. at the Boulder Public Library Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Wendy A. Larson, professor of modern Chinese literature and comparative literature at the University of Oregon, will give a talk on "Rewriting the Red: Sexualizing the Cultural Revolution in Post-Mao China" from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30, in the University Memorial Center, room 235.

Statement from Jane Grady Assistant Director Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder

Carol J. Clover, professor of Rhetoric and Scandinavian at the University of California, Berkeley, will present a talk on "Trials, Lawyers, Tricks, Sagas and Movies" at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder on Monday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the Ramaley Biology building, room C250. Clover specializes in medieval literature and culture, feminist theory, film history and film and popular culture. Her recent publications in film studies have appeared in several international publications. She is currently completing a new book on trials and courtroom drama.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in the College of Engineering and Applied Science will apply their design skills and engineering know-how for sheer fun as they compete in the annual College Egg Drop and Design Expo, highlights of Engineering Days 1999 at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder.

Internationally acclaimed poet Robert Bly will appear at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's Macky Auditorium on Tuesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. Bly, the author of "Iron John," "The Sibling Society" and "The Maiden King," is known for transforming his poetry readings into artistic performances. He will be joined on stage by Marcus Wise playing tabla and David Whetstone playing sitar. His visit to CU-Boulder will raise funds for the University Libraries cultural events project.
