Carnival, Movies Among Welcome Week Activities For New CU-Boulder ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½

Before they begin classes, new students at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will participate in a variety of fun and information-packed activities starting Aug. 19. Fall semester classes start Aug. 25, and besides the usual array of orientation sessions to cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college, students will have chances to socialize and get acquainted with Boulder during the week before school begins.

CU-Boulder's Chief Technologist Wins National Recognition

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's chief technologist has won one of the highest individual awards given by a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the use of technology in higher education. Kenneth J. Klingenstein received the EDUCAUSE Award for Leadership in Information Technologies recognizing his achievements in identifying and advancing technology directions for the various needs of higher education.

CU Prof Named Chair Of Trustee Board For Universities Space Research Association

Robert Schnabel, associate vice chancellor for academic and campus technology at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, has been named chair of the board of trustees of the Universities Space Research Association, or USRA. USRA is a consortium of nearly 100 universities whose mission is to provide a bridge to cooperation among universities; with the U.S. government primarily through NASA; and with several other organizations to improve research and education in the space sciences. Most of the university members are from the United States.

Grand Opening For New CU-Boulder Student Apartments To Be Held Aug. 15

A ceremony to mark the opening of Bear Creek Apartments at Williams Village, the new student housing complex at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, will be held Aug. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Representatives from CU-Boulder, the CU Foundation and American Campus Communities will kick off the event. A special tribute to the Williams family, which donated the land to the university in the early 1960s, also is planned. A ribbon-cutting and tours of the building will follow.

Colorado Schools Offered Training On Developing School Safety Plans

The Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative, Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, Professor Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder (Violence Prevention Center), The Colorado Trust and the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool today announced four regional training sessions to be held in October 2003. The free sessions will provide practical tools for school administrators and school resource officers to develop safe school plans, and information and guidance on implementing Colorado's school safety laws.

CU-Boulder To Test New Steam Supply At Folsom Field Aug. 5

Contractors building the new addition to the east side of Folsom Field will conduct a test of a new steam line Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The system is being tested to ensure that the steam supply for heating the new addition to the stadium functions properly and to test the safety of the new supply line, according to Steven Hecht, project manager for CU's Department of Facilities Management. The building is scheduled for occupancy Sept. 1.

Perseid Meteor Shower To Light Up Colorado Skies

The Perseid meteor shower, an annual celestial event, will be visible in night skies throughout Colorado in early August. The natural fireworks will be most visible in areas away from city lights and will peak before dawn in the early morning hours of Aug. 13, according to experts at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's Fiske Planetarium. Viewing is best where the sky is darkest. People also should avoid using binoculars and telescopes, which narrow the field of vision, according to Francisco Salas, program supervisor at CU-Boulder's Fiske Planetarium.

Earth System Education Meeting at CU Set for Aug. 3 through Aug. 5

NEWS TIP SHEET K-12 teachers, university faculty and researchers from around the United States will gather at CU-Boulder from Aug. 3 through Aug. 5 for the 2003 meeting of the Digital Library for Earth System Education. Hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, the meeting will be held in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University Memorial Center on the Boulder campus. The meeting is closed to the public, but media are encouraged to attend.

CU-Boulder Engineering Professor Wins National Award For Excellence

For the second time in three years, a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder professor has been selected to receive the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Allan P. Colburn Award for Excellence in Publications. Kristi Anseth, CU-Boulder professor of chemical and biological engineering and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute assistant investigator, will receive the national award and $5,000 prize at the annual AIChE meeting Nov. 16-21 in San Francisco.

More Than 1,000 Bicyclists Expected For CU-Boulder Scholarship Fund-Raiser

A dean and a group of prominent ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder alumni hope more than a thousand cyclists will sign up for pledge rides during a new fall fund-raiser to benefit students at the university's College of Arts and Sciences. The Buffalo Bicycle Classic will be held Sept. 7 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pledge-ride routes of 32, 65 and 100 miles will each begin and end near Folsom Field on the CU-Boulder campus. Proceeds raised by bikers will support student scholarships, research and creative projects.
