CU-Boulder Professor Who Discovered Ancient Turkish Church To Present Community Lecture On Sept. 13

Internationally known underwater archaeologist and CU-Boulder history Professor Robert Hohlfelder will kickoff the fall 2000 ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with his presentation "Swimming Over Time: A Survey of the Submerged Ruins of Aperlae." All talks in the ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series will be at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at The Academy, located at 970 Aurora Ave. in Boulder. The monthly lectures are free and open to the public.

UMAS To Host Annual Chicano History Week Activities At CU-Boulder

In recognition of Chicano History Week the United Mexican American ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ organization on the CU-Boulder campus will host a series of panel presentations Sept. 12-14. The annual event will address issues that are important to the Chicano community while revisiting the history of the Chicano activist movement, according to Teresa Estrada, UMAS council chair. The panels are meant to promote cultural education, appreciation and respect. "We always want to make sure that we involve ourselves in teaching the community about our history," Estrada said.

CU-Boulder Engineering Dean Ross Corotis Resigns, Holds Business Challenge Professorship

Ross B. Corotis, dean of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science, has resigned from his position effective at the end of the current academic year, July 31, 2001, Vice Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced today.

Calendar Item: "Mars Quest" At Fiske

Fiske Planetarium at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will explore the red planet during "Mars Quest," Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show examines the history of humankindÂ’s exploration of Mars, glancing in at the planet from space and exploring its surface. The show also delves into the question of life on Mars.

U.S. News Ranks CU-Boulder 26th Among Top Public Universities

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder tied for 26th in the 2000 ranking of the nationÂ’s top public four-year institutions in U.S. News & World ReportÂ’s annual Best Colleges issue, moving up from 31st in 1999. CU-Boulder was tied with the Colorado School of Mines, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of California-Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

CU Set To Fly Biomedical Experiments On September Space Shuttle Flight

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder researchers will test the effects of low gravity on two biomedical experiments aboard the upcoming flight of NASAÂ’s space shuttle Atlantis, now slated for liftoff Sept. 8 from Cape Kennedy, Fla. to the International Space Station.

CU-Boulder Department Of Housing To Host Annual Global Jam Sept. 14

The Housing Department at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will hold its annual Global Jam smorgasbord of culturally diverse foods on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Farrand Field. The special meal is meant to raise awareness about other cultures through ethnic entertainment and cuisine, according to Peggy Bonner, a CU-Boulder residence hall director. This yearÂ’s menu will offer foods from Africa, Brazil, the European Alps and down-home Southern cooking.

Rodriguez Del Pino Memorial Service Set For Sept. 9 At CU-Boulder

A memorial service for Salvador Rodriguez del Pino, former professor of ethnic studies and Chicano studies at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, in Old Main Chapel. Immediately following the service, a remembrance potluck will be held at Koenig Alumni Center. Participants are asked to bring a main dish to serve six to eight people and a salad or dessert. Cooking facilities are not available. Beverages and utensils will be provided.

CU-Boulder Plans Additional Safety Improvements On Campus

A number of safety improvements are in place at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder for the 2000-2001 school year and more are on the way. More than $300,000 in lighting improvements have been completed on the CU-Boulder campus over the past year. Another $300,000 is expected to be spent on lighting projects this year in an ongoing effort to improve campus safety, according to Jim Fadenrecht, public safety director at CU-Boulder.
