The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's Physics 2000 Web site has been honored by Scientific American magazine with a 2002 Sci-Tech Web Award for physics. Scientific American editors selected five Web sites in each of 10 scientific categories to receive the awards. The winning sites are posted on the Scientific American Web site at www.sciam.com .

The Study Abroad Program at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has awarded more than $152,000 in scholarships and grants to students enrolled in study abroad programs in summer 2002. The aid comes from the program's auxiliary accounts, alumni donations, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education Diversity Fund, foundation donations, the Council on International Exchange, Denmark International Study, the Boettcher Foundation and the Freeman Foundation.

The oft-criticized committee system in the U.S. House of Representatives resists change because it serves its members well, according to a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder political science professor. Advocates of congressional reform often point to the House committee system as an outmoded relic that could benefit from changes to make it more efficient and accountable. But since the late 1940s the system has changed little.

Ten new Daniels Scholars have elected to attend the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder this fall, according to Cynthia Gayles, CU-Boulder's senior assistant director of admissions and Daniels Scholarship liaison.

Researchers at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder are working to pinpoint rapidly melting glaciers and ice fields they believe may hold human artifacts and other organic materials, which could revolutionize anthropological theories and provide invaluable clues to human migration, colonization and adaptation dating back thousands of years.

An accomplished actor of Broadway, regional and touring theater will lead the cast of CU Opera's "The Pirates of Penzance," opening on July 6. Ben Saypol, 29, one of CU-Boulder's newest graduate music students, has appeared on Broadway and in a film starring Kevin Bacon. One of the most memorable moments during his five-year stint as a professional actor came during a successful audition for the role of Tony in the touring company of "West Side Story."

James F. Williams II, dean and director of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Libraries, is the 2002 recipient of the American Library Association's Melvil Dewey Medal, which recognizes distinguished service to the profession of librarianship. The award is given to an individual or group for recent creative professional achievement in library management, training, cataloging and classification, and the tools and techniques of librarianship. The medal was presented June 18 during the ALA's annual conference in Atlanta.

Shakespeare's "Macbeth" will take on an African flavor at this year's Colorado Shakespeare Festival with the creation of a tribal setting for the production by Director Sean Kelley and Choreographer Onye Ozuzu, based on West African and ancient Mayan cultures. Two Ghanian drummers will perform in the show to help convey the classic tragedy as a folk tale. "Macbeth" opens with a preview performance Wednesday and runs through Aug. 17 at the Mary Rippon outdoor theater on the Boulder campus.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder's School of Education and CU women's basketball coach Ceal Barry are collaborating on a computer camp for 25 female African American and Latina students grades six to eight June 24 to June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Barry and assistant coach La Tonya Watson will conduct a basketball mini-clinic on June 25 at the CU Recreation Center. Watson, an African American, also will speak to the students during lunch about her life experiences and becoming assistant coach.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Office of Community Affairs will host a public meeting on the "Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day" walk on Wednesday, July 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Darley Commons, room 103, in the Williams Village complex at 30th Street and Baseline Road. The "Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day" is a national fundraiser taking place in 13 cities during summer 2002.
