Artist Statement

I utilize an interdisciplinary practice to explore the facets of identity within the context of contemporary art spaces. I am interested in the physical presence of sculpture and performance which enables me to leverage space for the facilitation of progressive dialogs regarding the transcultural intersections of personhood. As a Mexican-American, my work often discusses the pursuit of Chicanismo (Mexican-American pride) within the mode of Western society. Promoting the validation of individualized subcultures, my work voices perspectives on singular vantage points — spots within my heritage where narrative peaks through. By challenging notions of culture, I can additionally incorporate conversations about identity as it transcends ethnicity, such as womanhood, relationships, and queerness. Using sculpture and performance work as portraitures, I can create vulnerable environments to build authentic and honest relationships with myself, my culture, my pieces, and my audience.
