Artist Statement

It's November 2^ndÌýand the marigolds are laid out. You view the pictures of your loved ones smiling and looking at you. You light the candles, some incense, and make sure everything looks just right for them. You don’t know how to feel. Is it sadness or gratitude? It’s a bittersweet mix. ÌýYou remember the days you heard the news; they’re ingrained in your memory. Or perhaps you've known loss from the moment you entered this world.

You may shed some tears, as I am now.Ìý

Yet, amidst the sorrow, memories of their vibrant lives emerge. They’re of golden hue. The smiles and laughs you shared; the pieces you have left of them all bring you comfort. You live with these feelings’ day by day; time works its slow and gentle mending. And today; today you realize they are not gone. Today the connection with them feels tangible once more.

Through the wisdom of our ancestors, we understand that people persist beyond the veil of death. Today is a celebration, a reunion with those who have departed.

Es el 2 de noviembre y las flores de cempasúchil envuelven todo. Ves las fotos de tus seres queridos sonriendo y mirándote. Enciendes las velas, el incienso y te aseguras de que todo luzca para ellos. No sabes cómo sentirte. ¿Triste o con aprecio? Es una mezcla agridulce. Recuerdas los días en que recibiste la noticia; están grabados en tu memoria. O quizás naciste conociendo la pérdida de alguien.

Puede que derrames algunas lágrimas, cómo lo estoy haciendo ahora.

Sin embargo, en medio del dolor, aparecen recuerdos de sus vidas vibrantes. Brillan como el oro. Las sonrisas que compartiste; los pedazos que te quedan de ellos te traen consuelo. Vives con estos sentimientos día tras día; el tiempo hace su suave y lenta reparación. Y hoy; hoy te das cuenta de que no se han ido. Hoy, la conexión con ellos se siente real una vez más.

A través de la sabiduría de nuestros antepasados, entendemos que las personas persisten más allá del velo de la muerte. Hoy es una celebración, un reencuentro con aquellos que han partido.
