Parental Leave

Non-Tenure Track Nine-Month Faculty (Instructors, Senior Instructors, Teaching Professors, Scholars in Residence, Artists in Residence and Clinical Faculty)Ìý

  • Non-Tenure Track Nine-Month Faculty receive 18 weeks of parental leave.Ìý
    • Parental Leave may be taken by eligible employees for the following medical reasons:Ìý
      • The birth of a child;ÌýÌý
      • Care of a newborn child;Ìý
      • The placement and care of a child from adoption or foster care;Ìý
  • The faculty member will receive the first six weeks of paid parental leave at their current salaryÌý
  • This policy only applies to Non Tenure-Track Faculty (i.e. Instructor-rank, or Teaching Professor-rank faculty) who have a base appointment or combined appointments at 50% (.50 FTE) and above.Ìý
    • Once parental leave is exhausted the employee may use accrued sick leave (and/or FAMLI, if eligible) if remaining on leave.Ìý
    • If the faculty member exhausts all paid parental leave and sick leave before the end of an eighteen week period, and is not FAMLI eligible, then the faculty member may continue the leave for the remainder of the period at 50% pay with full benefits.Ìý
    • If the faculty member is enrolled in short-term disability insurance, short term disability may apply once sick leave accruals have been exhausted.ÌýÌý
  • All other terms and conditions for eligibility, definitions and usage of the APS 5019 remain unchanged.Ìý
  • The Deans offices, working with Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA), manage leave and teaching replacement for non-tenure track nine-month faculty members.ÌýÌý
  • This policy does not apply to Lecturers or any other job classification not listed above.Ìý

Instructor Sick AccrualsÌý

Instructors accrue sick leave at the rate of 5.5 days per semester or 11 days per academic year prorated for the % of time of all active appointments for that period up to 1FTE.ÌýÌý

This calculation will be based on the accruals for the part-time base appointment and any additional jobs during the same term.Ìý

For example:Ìý

  • Instructor A has a 50% appointment in Department A. Instructor A has also been assigned a 25% lecturer appointment in Department B. The total accruals for this period of time will be based on a 75% accrual as an instructor.Ìý
  • Instructor B has a 75% appointment in Department B. Instructor B has also been assigned as a 50% lecturer in Department C. The accruals for this period of time will be based on a 100% accrual as an instructor.Ìý

Procedures for Requesting Parental LeaveÌý

  • The faculty member contacts the Central HR Leave coordinators at leave@cu.edu to initiate the application for Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) and/or Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) coverage, if beneficial and eligible.Ìý

    • The Central HR Leave coordinators will respond to your inquiry.Ìý

      • The response will include CAS Faculty Affairs CC’d to kick off the Boulder campus’s parental leave process.Ìý

        • Regardless of FAMLI and/or FMLA coverage, you must complete theÌýBoulder campus leave documentation to be absent from the College and campus. Ìý

        • Approval of a parental leave absence by the College and campus is not dependent upon FMLA or FAMLI coverage. Ìý

    • The Central HR Leave coordinators will guide you on all documentation required for FMLA and/or FAMLI coverage (if applicable).Ìý

      • Eligibility for FMLA and/or FAMLI coverage is not required to be eligible for the paid parental leave from the College and Boulder campus.Ìý

    • CAS Faculty Affairs will provide your sick leave accruals to you and the Central HR Leave team.Ìý

  • Once contacted by the Central HR Leave coordinator CAS Faculty Affairs will request the following information:Ìý

    • Note: Faculty who are rostered in multiple units must submit individual leave requests for each unit.Ìý

    • Chair’s name and email address;Ìý

    • If rostered to more than one department, information for both chairs is requiredÌý

    • Director’s name and email address (if rostered in an institute or museum);Ìý

    • Dates of leave request (either an entire semester or specific dates during a semester);Ìý

  • CAS Faculty Affairs reviews the submitted information and submits the Leave of Absence for Parental Leave form for completion on your behalf.Ìý

    • This is the document that will authorize your absence from campus. Once this document has been fully signed, your requested leave of absence has been approved. Ìý

    • Please continue working with the Central HR Leave team to finalize your FMLA/FAMLI leave, if applicable. Ìý

    • For Instructors who are appointed below 100%, the request will be submitted by CAS Faculty Affairs via the CAS internal DocuSign power form.ÌýÌý

  • Faculty on split appointments MUST submit a leave of absence request from all units they are rostered in.ÌýÌý

  • A copy of the final, approved request is submitted by the power form to the following:Ìý

    • Unit(s),Ìý

    • Boulder Campus Human Resources Service Center (HRSC) Coordinators, andÌýÌý

    • College of Arts and Sciences Budget Office, if leave is unpaid or sick leave is fully/partially exhausted by the leave.Ìý
