Turbidity

Analysts interested in the wastewater turbidity during different stages of treatment, surface water turbidity before or after run-off, and drinking water turbidity should consider using the Hach 2100N Turbidimeter. There are two turbidimeters in the engineering laboratories. The turbidimeters quantify turbidity, the clarity of surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and drinking water. Turbidity is impacted by clay, silt, colloidal inorganic and organic matter, algae, dissolved colored organic compounds, and microscopic organisms. The turbidimeters use a nephelometer to measure the intensity of light scattering by suspended solids in unfiltered samples. The sample turbidity increases as the intensity of light scattering increases. Turbidity concentrations are determined simultaneously by the turbidimeter by comparing the sample’s nephelometric turbidity units (NTU’s) to a set of Formazin polymer calibration standards ranging from 0-4000 NTU’s.
