A new survey published in the Jan. 24th issue of The Economist in London ranked the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder the 11th best public academic university in the world and the 31st best academic university globally in 2003. Also published by the European Commission and the European Union, the two-year study, which was completed at the end of December 2003, was undertaken by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The CU Parents Association at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has awarded $42,000 in grants to 22 campus organizations that help enrich student life. The grants are awarded annually to CU-Boulder organizations whose projects build community, promote diversity, improve student safety or meet other association goals.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Anthony Barker, associate dean of natural sciences and a professor of physics at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, will be held Thursday, March 11, at 3 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel. The service will be followed by a reception in the CU Heritage Center on the third floor of Old Main. Barker, 42, died of natural causes the weekend of Feb 28-29 at his ski condominium in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

W. Bush who faced one of the nation's worst environmental disasters, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, will speak at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder on March 17.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Geography Professor Roger Barry was named distinguished professor by the CU Board of Regents at its March 4 meeting. Barry, who is director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center/World Data Center for Glaciology, headquartered at CU-Boulder, joins only 19 other CU-Boulder faculty members who currently hold the title of distinguished professor. He also is a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, which oversees NSIDC.

Ethnic studies Professor Natsu Taylor Saito will address the effects of U.S. foreign policy on international human rights protection March 12 at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. Saito's talk, "We Have Met the Enemy Â… American Exceptionalism Confronts the Rule of Law," will be held from 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. in University Memorial Center room 384. Her book on the topic is forthcoming from New York University Press.

Jean Kilbourne, known internationally for her pioneering work to improve the image of women in media and advertising, will present a free public lecture March 12 as part of Body Acceptance Month at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. "The Obsession with Thinness" will take place in room 235 of the University Memorial Center at 7:30 p.m. CU-Boulder has double the national campus average rate of anorexia, according to university health officials.

How lizards, turtles and people run and the story behind liquid crystals will be highlights of two separate March 13 presentations at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. The CU Wizards show "How Animals Move" will take place at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building room 140. At 2 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30, the CU-Boulder physics department will present "Liquid Crystals" as part of its Saturday Physics Series. Both shows are free and open to the public.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has named three recipients of the 2004 Dorothy Martin Faculty and Doctoral Student Awards, presented by Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center. The awards honor women who exemplify the ideals of Professor Emerita Dorothy Martin, a faculty member of the CU-Boulder psychology department for 46 years who was instrumental in establishing the first CU Women's Center in 1964.

In recognition of their creative research and potential contributions to society, 11 professors at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder have received faculty fellowships for the 2004-05 academic year. "We are pleased to grant these fellowships to 11 deserving members of the Boulder faculty," said Fred Pampel, associate vice chancellor for research in the CU-Boulder Graduate School. Pampel is a member of the campus' Council on Research and Creative Work, a nearly 70-year-old CU-Boulder organization that provides funding to outstanding faculty.
