CU Heritage Center To Feature Glenn Miller Exhibit During Extended Hours

The CU-Boulder Heritage Center has extended its hours to increase time available for viewing of the current Glenn Miller exhibit, running through December, and all of the center's other permanent exhibits. The new hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., adding Mondays and Saturdays to the former schedule to accommodate football and other visitors.

Wieman And Cornell Receive Prize From Optical Society Of America

Carl Wieman of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder and Eric Cornell of the National Institute of Standards and Technology have been awarded the 1999 R.W. Wood Prize from the Optical Society of America. The award honors an outstanding discovery, scientific or technological achievement, or invention in the field of optics. Wieman and Cornell were cited "for their creative inventiveness and persistent ingenuity applied to the development of laser techniques for cooling atoms, which led to the first demonstration of Bose-Einstein condensation of an atomic vapor."

Astronomer John Stocke To Explore Traditional Navajo Views Of The Sky

John Stocke, a CU-Boulder professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences, will present "Navajo Skies" at Fiske Planetarium on Friday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m.

"An Evening Of Jewish Music" Set At CU-Boulder Nov. 4

CU-Boulder Hillel's Sheer Kef a capella group and the Colorado Hebrew Chorale will present "An Evening of Jewish Music" on Thursday, Nov. 4, marking the first time the music ensembles have combined efforts to perform in Boulder. Gilbert White To Give Distinguished Lecture At The National Academy Of Sciences On Nov. 5

Gilbert White, distinguished professor emeritus of geography at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, will present the ninth Abel Wolman Distinguished Lecture on Nov. 5 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. White will lecture on "Water Science and Technology: Some Lessons from the 20th Century," in which he will discuss the future integration of environmental policy with water management policy.

CU-Colorado Tourism Conference Addresses Future Of Industry In Colorado

Dennis Mileti Receives International Award

Professor Dennis Mileti, chair of the sociology department and director of the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, has received the 1999 Eric Noji Award from the World Health Organization. The award cited Mileti's "pioneering multidisciplinary teaching and research in disaster management." The World Health Organization is part of the United Nations. The award was presented on Sept. 19 in Hawaii.

CU-Boulder Graduate ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ In Chinese Gain Prestigious Placements Nationwide

Graduate students with degrees in Chinese from the East Asian languages and civilizations department at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder are getting positions at prestigious universities all over the nation -- a notable accomplishment for a small and relatively new humanities program. "The word is out that our program trains people very well and we are gaining recognition nationwide," said Paul W. Kroll, director of graduate studies in Chinese.
