Kayden Book Award Winners Announced By CU Foundation

A ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder expert on the political aftermath of war is among three winners of this year's Eugene M. Kayden awards for excellence in scholarly writing. CU-Boulder's Roland Paris joined Duke University's Karla Holloway and Anath Ariel de Vidas from the University of Haifa, Israel, in accepting Kayden awards, which are administered by the CU Foundation. A CU selection committee annually reviews the award nominations and the awards are presented by Chancellor Richard L. Bynny.

Paul Voakes Named Dean Of School Of Journalism And Mass Communication At CU-Boulder

Paul S. Voakes, associate professor at the Indiana University School of Journalism, has been appointed dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder, pending final approval by the CU Board of Regents. The appointment, effective July 1, was announced by Provost Phil DiStefano. "I am confident that Paul Voakes will provide the necessary leadership to navigate the tough fiscal times ahead and move the school to the next level of excellence in its academic programs," DiStefano said.

CU-Boulder's Colorado Engineer Magazine Named 'Magazine Of The Year'

Colorado Engineer Magazine, a student publication at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder since 1904, brought home 10 awards including first-place Magazine of the Year from Engineering College Magazines Associated this spring. ECMA, which has 14 active members including Purdue, Cornell, the University of Wisconsin and other top engineering schools, presented the awards April 5 in Minneapolis.

Colorado Attorney General To Speak At CU-Boulder School Of Law Graduation Ceremony

Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar will deliver the keynote address at the CU-Boulder School of Law graduation ceremony on May 9 at 2 p.m. in Macky Auditorium. One hundred-sixty students are set to graduate. Salazar, who is serving his second consecutive term, was elected in 1998 and is the state's 36th attorney general. He received his undergraduate degree from Colorado College and his law degree from the University of Michigan.

CU-Boulder Investigates Asbestos Contamination During Abatement Project

Officials at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder are investigating the cause of an asbestos contamination incident during an asbestos abatement project in a small ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ facility near the Williams Village residence hall complex. There was no exposure to students or the general public. On Thursday evening, air monitoring systems for the project detected asbestos levels that exceeded state and federal limits. The incident was contained to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, a service building located near Williams Village at the intersection of 30th Street and Baseline Road.

Growing World Urban Populations Threatened By Massive Earthquakes

A new study by a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder geological sciences professor suggests one earthquake causing up to 1 million fatalities on Earth each century could occur unless more earthquake-resistant construction materials are implemented. Professor Roger Bilham's conclusions are based on a study of the world's urban population growth in the 21st century, including the number of rapidly expanding "supercities" and their locations close to major fault lines that have caused past temblors.

CU-Boulder Class Presents Communication Plan For Illuminated Flying Disc On April 29

Seniors in Assistant Professor Kendra Gale's advertising campaign class at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder will present their communication plan for an illuminated flying disc -- a disc with fiber optic lights powered by a small battery -- on Tuesday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m. in room 425 of the University Memorial Center. The advertising project was developed for "Flashflight," a Boulder startup company owned by Jeff Scott and Jerry Moore, and a division of Playhard Inc.

CU Board Of Regents Designates ATLAS Program The First New Institute On CU-Boulder Campus In 35 Years

The Board of Regents today designated the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) as the first new institute at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder in 35 years and the first campus institute with a mission that will equally balance teaching, research and outreach. ATLAS is a campuswide initiative that aims to prepare all students for lives and leadership careers in the Information Age and is dedicated to improving the understanding and application of information and communication technology.

CU-Boulder Entrepreneurship Center Announces New Advisory Board Member

Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at CU-Boulder has appointed Kirk Holland, a general partner with Vista Ventures, a Broomfield venture capital firm, to its advisory board. The Deming Center is a joint program of the Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
