CU-Boulder Offers New Way To Protect Student Privacy

In response to student feedback, the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has developed a new “limited-privacy” option for students who donÂ’t want their names and addresses released for use in directories or mass mailings. Effective Feb. 2, students will be able to protect themselves from mass mailings while continuing to allow public access to certain kinds of information if they select the “limited-privacy” option for their records maintained by the campus.

Do-It-Yourself Physics Fun Offered At CU-Boulder Website

Physics doesn't have to be boring and a new site on the World Wide Web featuring cartoon characters and action-filled experiments aims to prove it. The site was developed by physics professors at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder and is intended for non-scientists and students of all ages. It allows users to conduct more than 30 interactive "virtual experiments" on their computer screens and then get an explanation of what they are seeing.

Fiske Planetarium Examines Phenomenon Of Distant Worlds

A slight wobble in starlight provides evidence of a planet orbiting a distant star, and what next? The question of whether there is other life in the galaxy is revived. But why has it taken so long for astronomers to verify the existance of other worlds, suspected since long before recorded time? And what is the next step in determining whether there is life on another planet? The discovery of several new planets beyond our solar system during the last two years will be the topic of a new star show at Fiske Planetarium at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder.

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ LibrariesÂ’ new web-based catalog, Webcat, has made CU-Boulder a leader in providing access to its print, multi-media and CD-ROM resources. “No other library has put its entire catalog on the World Wide Web for everyone to access,” said Lori Arp, head of the reference department at Norlin Library. With 1.7 million records, the catalog provides information about the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ LibrariesÂ’ 12 million print, media and CD-ROM resources. Media resources include audio-video materials, microfiche and microfilm.

CU School Of Law Sponsors Forum On Crime And Violence

The School of Law at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ will sponsor a day-long symposium titled Crime is Not the Problem: Lethal Violence in America. The forum will be from 8:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Fleming Law Building. The content was inspired by a book by the same name written by Franklin Zimring and Gordon Hawkins. The public is invited to register for the symposium, which is $65 prior to Feb. 14 and $75 thereafter, by calling Debra Sparn at 492-6145.

Study Shows High-Tech Conveniences May Hurt Customer Service, Satisfaction

When a customer had a technical question about his answering machine, he used the Internet to find the manufacturer's contact information. Yahoo offered him access to the companyÂ’s site, but when he clicked on that choice, he found himself at a sex site. The customer called the manufacturer to report the Internet problem, and the representative chuckled. They had known about the mix-up for a week. Amusing? Not when you think of the potential impact on the manufacturer's image, according to CU-Boulder marketing Professor Tom Duncan.

Transgenic Mice Created By Researchers May Shed Light On Human Heart Disease

A ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder research team has created several strains of transgenic mice that carry gene mutations for a heart disease that has been shown to be the leading cause of sudden death in young athletes.

Memorial Service Set Feb. 4 For Former CU President Rautenstraus

A memorial service for former ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ President Roland Rautenstraus is set for Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the CU-Boulder campus. Chancellor Richard L. Byyny is hosting the service and a reception immediately afterward in the Heritage Center on the third floor of Old Main. Both events are open to the public and to all CU-Boulder faculty and staff.
