He took part in 12 Antarctic explorations. His scientific research has appeared in 280 articles and reports. Last month CU-Boulder scientist John Behrendt was honored for 40 years of exploration and research. On Oct. 14 the Italian Antarctic National Research Program and the Academia Nazionale dei Linceia awarded Behrendt the first Felice Ippolito Gold Medal for his "significant and fruitful research in that continent." The medal is named after the late Professor Felice Ippolito, vice president of the Antarctic National Scientific Board at the time of his death.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny has announced that former biology professor Jane Bock will join Bob Fink and Jack Kelso in serving as a faculty ombudsperson. Bock, professor emeritus of EPO biology, retired in 1998 after 30 years of teaching at the university. She was the 1998 recipient of the Hazel Barnes Prize and is a former co-chair of the Sexual Harassment Committee.

Two faculty members who have been outstanding research mentors for CU-Boulder's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program will receive awards on Nov. 16 from Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and Dean Peter Spear of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Casey Hynes of the CU-Boulder chemistry department will explain "what happens when something burns" at the next CU Wizards show, "The Chemical History of a Candle," on Saturday, Nov. 27, on the CU-Boulder campus. The hour-long show begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Chemistry Building, room 140, and is free and open to the public.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Phil DiStefano has selected Barbara Schneider as the new executive director of enrollment management services and admissions at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. The appointment will be considered at the Dec. 9 Board of Regents' meeting in Boulder and will be effective upon approval.

Ken Krechmer, an internationally recognized authority on standards and founder of Communications Standards Review, will present a series of public lectures at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder beginning Tuesday, Nov. 16. The series is designed to help build a broad understanding of how technical standards are developed, a topic that has sparked widespread interest in recent years due to rapid developments in information and communication technology. Krechmer is expected to address the standards aspects of the U.S. government's antitrust suit against Microsoft.

Former Colorado congressman David Skaggs will open the Friends of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Libraries' Treasures series with a lecture on Monday, Nov. 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Old Main Chapel on the Boulder campus. A reception at the CU Heritage Center will follow the free event, which is open to the public. The Heritage Center is on the third floor of Old Main. Skaggs will speak on "Journalism and Democracy in the 21st Century: Can Politicians and Journalists be Adults Together?" A question-and-answer session will follow.
