The Study Abroad Program at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has awarded more than $94,000 in scholarships and 71 exchange positions to 204 students enrolled in study abroad programs this summer, fall or academic year. The aid comes from the program's auxiliary accounts, alumni donations, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education Diversity Fund and foundation donations. Exchange positions are not monetary awards but a reduction in study abroad program fees worth several thousands of dollars thanks to agreements with certain foreign universities.

Several undergraduate study abroad students at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder have received scholarships to study in other countries this summer, fall and academic year. Two diversity scholarships, one awarded by CU-Boulder and the other by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, help cover expenses in the Study Abroad program for Colorado residents who are underrepresented on the Boulder campus because they are ethnic minorities or from the state's rural areas.

Following is an update of campus safety information for the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. While this fact sheet doesnÂ’t list every safety measure found on campus, it does provide information about some of the most visible. EMERGENCY CALL BOXES * Nineteen call boxes were installed in 1998-99 at a cost of $300,000, with the final one installed at the corner of 13th and Pennsylvania streets in July 1999. Twelve call boxes were in place previously, bringing the total to 31 emergency call boxes on the main CU-Boulder campus.

Two CU-Boulder faculty members are finalists for the 8th annual Colorado Book Awards. Law professor and murder mystery novelist Marianne Wesson is a finalist in the Adult Fiction category for her book, "Render Up the Body." "I’m delighted, of course, especially because it is possible to read ‘Render Up The Body’ as nothing more than a work of genre fiction," said Wesson. "But I hoped the book would find readers looking not just for a mystery, but also something more. This recognition is very meaningful to me, and very satisfying."

For avid tree peepers, the stateÂ’s quaking aspen colors should be glorious this fall, according to a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder professor.

The CU-Boulder Career Services office, in conjunction with the colleges of Business and Engineering, will hold a Career Fair for all CU-Boulder students on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Coors Events/Conference Center. The fair is open to CU students only and not to non-student job seekers. The Career Fair will give business representatives an opportunity to provide CU students with literature regarding their companies. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ are encouraged to meet with company representatives and learn about the interviewing process.

The ChancellorÂ’s Committee on Women at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder has just released its second annual report. That 16-member committee, a representative group of faculty, staff and students, prepared a report that provides baseline data and recommendations concerning the current status of women on campus. The report formally documents the status of women at CU-Boulder, analyzes quantitative and qualitative data by gender and ethnicity, and notes trends regarding equity and diversity over the past 10 years.

"Black Holes and Relativity," a presentation by professor Andrew Hamilton, is the first in a series of live public astronomy shows at Fiske Planetarium at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Boulder. The program will be held on Friday Sept. 10 and Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. "Black Holes and Relativity" includes recent Hubble Space Telescope observations of possible black holes in distant galaxies and a look at other evidence of black holes in our own Milky Way galaxy. It features a fantastic but scientifically accurate view of a one-way flight into a black hole.

Three members of the CU-Boulder-headquartered Optoelectronics Computing Systems Center were selected by the Optical Society of America to represent the U.S. optics industry at a recent U.S. House of Representatives reception. Hosted by the Coalition for National Science Funding, the event was designed to highlight past results of government-supported science and to illustrate the benefits and need for continued federal support.
