What is Sko Serve?

The CU Sko Serve program sends teams of college students to engage in meaningful service during their breaks from school. This program allows students to explore the United States while making a difference through service, reflecting upon their experience and creating long-lasting connections with others. We hope you’ll be a part of this experience!Ìý

What do you do in a Sko Serve program?

While each program is different, they all focus on a particular social or environmental issue. Each program will engage in meaningful service, reflect and create connections with others.Ìý

How do I get involved with Sko Serve?

Site leaders: Each Sko Serve program is led by two site leaders. Site leaders are responsible for planning all aspects of a Sko Serve program, which includes recruiting participants, facilitating pre-program meetings and leading the group during the program. In addition, site leaders create safe spaces for learning and reflection, encourage and foster full participation and implement the philosophies of the Volunteer Resource Center and Sko Serve program. Can I go on a Sko Serve trip with my friend?

When applying to participate in a Sko Serve program, we highly suggest ranking programs based on your personal interests. While that may be a different program than your friend is interested in, we believe it is important to step outside your comfort zone and spend a week with people who are new to you. You never know— you could gain another great friend!Ìý

Why are Sko Serve programs drug, tobacco and alcohol free?

The Sko Serve program adheres to the , as outlined by  An important aspect of the experience is full engagement, which substances have the ability to interfere with. Out of respect for the communities we serve and our fellow students—and to help create a meaningful, productive and educational Sko Serve experience—drugs, alcohol and tobacco are not permitted, regardless of a participant's age.Ìý

How much does it cost to participate in Sko Serve program?

The Sko Serve program cost will vary and is dependent on transportation, food, lodging and community partner fees. The program has many scholarships available. Indicate interest and need when submitting the participant application. Learn more about costs and Spring Break Programs.Ìý

How will we travel to our destination and where do we stay?

All Sko Serve programs travel in a 12- or 15-passenger van. Each program varies in terms of eating and sleeping arrangements. Some organizations provide housing and meals, while other participants may buy and cook their own food. In the past, programs have stayed at local churches, camped in tents or stayed at the host agency.Ìý

How many people go on a Sko Serve program?

There are 10 participants and two site leaders on each SkoÌýServe program.

Why doesn’t the website reveal the specific destination of the Sko Serve programs and when do we find out where we are going?

The CU Sko Serve program has made the intentional decision to only advertise the state to which the programs are traveling. This decision was made to encourage participants to apply for a program based on a topic that interests them rather than the destination of interest. Once accepted into the Sko Serve program, participants will learn their specific destination at the Reveal event.Ìý
