Daniel Party IIThe American Music Research Center will host Dr. Daniel Party,Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, on Monday, February 2to present his work on"The uses of Víctor Jara in Chilean Social Movements (2009-2019)." Ashas been widely noted,the Chilean social uprising of October 2019 had as an unofficial anthem Víctor Jara’s song “El derecho de vivir en paz.” To help clarifythe significance of this gesture, Dr. Party willtrace in his presentationthe ways in which Jara and his music have been used in Chile since 2009.

This free andpublic talk willtake place at 2 pm in CASE E351 on CU Boulder campusand willkick-off thissemester's Musicology & Music Theory Colloquium Series, a College of Music semester-long traditionthatoffersstudents,faculty, other CU campus departments, and thepublic a unique opportunity to meet and hear from some of the leading national and international researchers in music theory andethnomusicology, including topics inWestern,African, Japanese, Latin American, American Indian, and Euro-American musics.

Daniel Partyhails from the University of Pennsylvania where he was awarded aPh.D in music history and isnow Professor atPontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Heis a popular music scholar whoes main research interest ismusic under dictatorship, particularly under Pinochet's Chile and Franco's Spain.Dr. Party says, "While most research on popular music and dictatorship deals with either state-sponsored music or protest songs, mine focuses on mainstream musics and musicians that remained detached from party politics."

He is also interested in U.S. Latinomusic and migration and in gender studies. He wasAssociate Professor atSaint Mary's College, a visiting ProfessoratTulane University,University of Oregon,BrownUniversity,University of Georgia and has a long list of publications, fellowships, awards,grants and invited guest lectures and workships which are.
