Leanne Hirshfield

Leanne Hirshfield

Lead Principal Investigator • Associate Research Professor
Institute of Cognitive Science • CU Boulder
Dr. Leanne Hirshfield’s research explores the use of non-invasive brain measurement to passively classify users’ social, cognitive, and affective states in order to enhance usability testing and adaptive system design. She works primarily with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a relatively new non-invasive brain imaging device that is safe, portable, robust to noise, which can be implemented wirelessly; making it ideal for research in human-computer interaction. The high density fNIRS equipment...
Allison Anderson

Allison Anderson

Co- Investigator • Assistant Professor
Aerospace Engineering Sciences • CU Boulder
Dr. Allison Anderson's research investigates human health and performance in aerospace environments. My students and I develop technologies to measure and mitigate the body’s adaptations to extreme stressors with the primary motivation to advance human space exploration. While my diverse interests have led me into several seemingly disparate disciplines, each maintains this common thread: to support humans doing exceptional work in demanding environments.
Professional Marta

Marta ÄŒeko

Co- Investigator • Assistant Research Professor
Institute of Cognitive Science • CU Boulder
Dr. Marta Čeko’s research explores brain mechanisms of pain and negative affect in health and disease. She combines computational modeling with neuroimaging, behavioral data and multiple types of physiological data to develop predictive and generalizable brain and physiology-based models of aversive processing and regulation.
Professional James

James Crum

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Institute of Cognitive Science • CU Boulder
Dr. James Crum is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Science. More specifically, he is a cognitive neuroscientist at SHINE Lab. He uses multimodal methods (e.g., fMRI, fNIRS, deep-learning, etc.) in ‘real-world’ and lab-based paradigms to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms supporting cognitive security (i.e., how the brain defends against information-based threats). This research is supported by the Department of Defense’s Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives (MURI) Program.
Professional Sage

Sage Sherman

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Aerospace Engineering Sciences • CU Boulder
Dr. Sage Sherman is a postdoctoral associate working under Dr. Allie Anderson, and he received his BS, MS, and PhD in aerospace engineering sciences here at CU Boulder. His research interests include human performance evaluation, performance countermeasures for aerospace operators, human-computer interaction, and spaceflight applications for international development. Previous research he has conducted investigated how sensory noise could be used to improve elements of information processing in humans through a...
